My VIP ID
Q: What is My VIP ID?
A: The 8-digit My VIP ID can be used at the University of South Carolina as an alternative to the USC Identification number (your Social Security Number) when logging into VIP, the University's system-wide intranet/portal at http://vip.sc.edu. This new ID number is automatically generated for active students, staff, and faculty members and is a unique and permanent number that identifies each member of the University community.

To find out your 8-digit My VIP ID, you must initially log on to VIP using your USC Identification number (your Social Security Number) and PIN (the 4-digit number), and from the personal link, establish a password to accompany the My VIP ID. From that point on, the My VIP ID and password can be used to gain access to VIP.

NOTE: My VIP ID is NOT the same as your Network Username/password.

Q: Is My VIP ID a replacement for my Social Security Number in the University's administrative system?
A: No. USC will maintain the 9-digit University Identification Number (SSN) as the key identifier in student, business, and human resource systems until the conversion to a new student and administrative information system has been completed. The My VIP ID will be connected to the SSN for retrieval purposes. The University of South Carolina will continue to collect and maintain Social Security Numbers (SSN) of employees, students, and others associated with the University as required by law.

Q: May I use the 8-digit My VIP ID to sign in to VIP?
A: Yes. The 8-digit My VIP ID can be used for VIP.

Q: Where else may I use the 8-digit My VIP ID?
A: The Office of the University Registrar will accept your 8-digit My VIP ID and will then employ a special procedure to retrieve your SSN for system processing. Authorized administrative staff in other offices may also accept the 8-digit My VIP ID. If you see this sign

posted on a web site or at an office, you may use your the 8-digit My VIP ID instead of your USC Identification Number (Social Security Number).

Q: Will all students and staff use the 8-digit My VIP ID?
A: No. The SSN/PIN option must remain on VIP for former inactive students who will not have an 8-digit My VIP ID. Students are assigned a My VIP ID when they make a commitment to enroll at USC and they become active in the Student data base. Undergraduate students enrolled within the past year and graduate students enrolled within the past two years will have a My VIP ID, but others must continue to use the SSN to access VIP. Faculty and staff in good standing have a My VIP ID, as do sponsored guests, retirees and affiliates.

Q: What is My VIP ID Password?
A: The 8-digit My VIP ID must be accompanied by a unique password called the My VIP ID Password. To set or reset your password, logon to VIP using your University ID (SSN) and 4-digit PIN. Then link to Personal and "show me My VIP ID and password". Then create a secure password to accompany your My VIP ID. You must remember your own My VIP ID number and password in order to avoid using your SSN with VIP.

Note: This password is not the same as your network password which you use to access other University resources. This password is only used with your My VIP ID.

Password restrictions: Must 8 - 14 characters and must meet at least three of the following:

  • One or more lowercase alphabetic characters (a-z)
  • One or more uppercase alphabetic characters (A-Z)
  • One or more numeric characters (0-9)
  • One or more special characters (!@#$%^&*-+= etc)
Q: How do I reset My VIP ID Password?
A: In order to reset your My VIP ID Password, you need to logon to VIP using your University ID (SSN) and 4-digit PIN. Then link to Personal and "show me My VIP ID and password". If you have forgotten your PIN, information is avaliable for Students or Faculty/Staff.
